2nd REGIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AFRICA HEALTH WORKFORCE OBSERVATORY

The second meeting of the Health Workforce Observatory was held in Cotonou, Benin from 6-9 October 2009, supported by EC funding and a contribution from the Global Health Workforce Alliance. The purpose of this meeting is to review the progress made since 2006 and to discuss how to accelerate the expansion and strengthening of the Observatory.

Developed by WHO Regional Office for Western Pacific (WPRO), this software application facilitates the production of comparative, cadre-specific and summary reports for health workforce projections and cost parameters. Human Resources development for health: accelerating implementation of the regional strategy.

Despite efforts by countries to improve the utilization of human resources for health towards better health outcomes, the implementation of appropriate strategies has been slow, with variable outcomes in countries. It is in response to the concerns raised by Member States during the 51st session of the Regional Committee, that this document has been approved to provide guidance and focus on priority actions that could lead to real and positive changes in countries.
